Funding Science for the SDGs: A Bi-Regional LAC–EU Opportunity

The Seville Meeting on SDG Financing convenes at a critical juncture for science and international cooperation. The European Union (EU) and Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC) share enduring historical, cultural, and economic ties. However, their collaboration on scientific funding mechanisms remains fragmented. As the EU prepares its next Research Framework Programme (FP10), there lies an urgent and timely opportunity to redefine how both regions co-invest in science to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This event aims to catalyze actionable steps toward a cohesive, bi-regional science funding ecosystem that reflects shared priorities, mutual benefit, and equitable partnership.

Objectives

  • Highlight the transformative potential of LAC–EU science partnerships for SDG acceleration.
  • Present and refine models for flexible, co-designed funding instruments.
  • Strategize LAC integration within the global challenges pillar of FP10.
  • Launch concrete initiatives for sustained cooperation post-event.

.

Key Themes

  • Biodiversity & Climate: Joint biobanking and nature-based solutions
  • Global Health: Cross-border One Health and pandemic preparedness
  • Digital Inclusion: Co-created platforms for equitable AI deployment
  • Clean Energy: Community-focused, renewable energy solutions

.

Proposed Mechanisms

  • Triangular cooperation frameworks (involving EU, LAC, and third partners)
  • Co-funding initiatives between national science agencies
  • Bi-directional researcher mobility and institutional capacity building
  • Formal LAC participation in FP10 governance structures

.

Expected Outcomes

  • Establishment of a LAC–EU SDG Science Taskforce
  • Formation of Seed Collaboration Groups in priority SDG areas
  • Launch of a shared proposal calendar to synchronize funding calls
  • Development of a minimal digital platform to support coordination and visibility

.

Call to Action

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Join the emerging LAC–EU SDG Science Network
  • Engage in shaping the FP10 agenda to be inclusive of LAC perspectives
  • Initiate or support transformative, co-funded science proposals
